Just because water is bottled doesn’t mean it’s better for you. In fact, some bottled waters are essentially the same as (or worse than) tap water and others are almost as bad as soda — yikes! So, how do you know if the bottled water you’re drinking is good for you? The pH level is a great place to start.
When it comes down to it, any water with a pH level of less than 7.0 is considered acidic, or harmful to the body. However, some of the most popular brands have a pH level of less than 5.5 — meaning it can dissolve tooth enamel, aka the hardest substance in the body … If it can do that to your teeth, imagine what it can do to the rest of your body!
On top of that, a study done by the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, says many bottled water brands have a more acidic pH than what is actually listed, making it hard to know if a bottled water brand falls between a more neutral to safe level of 7.0 to 9.0. Unfortunately for these bottled water brands, the information can be found on Alkaline Water Plus.
We take a look at the worst bottled water brand (page 10) and the best bottled water brand (page 15) you can buy, according to pH level, ahead.

As far as bottled water is concerned, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a standard of between 6.5 to 8.5. And, although SmartWater technically meets this standard, it still falls on the acidic side of the spectrum. Not to mention: It uses 48% more plastic than competing brands. No thanks!
